I love old Cathedrals. They have a certain vibe to it and they are usually pretty quiet which is a nice change of pace when in big, busy cities

Agree, most cathedrals look amazing and stunning too

but they speak latin

Lingua Latina suprema est

Orthodox Curches> Other Curches

What’s a curch?

He meant my crotch.

You'd better guard it if you're in a church

A place where you worhsep the lawd and pway for ur sinz to be forgivez

oh boy, an extremist

They haven't spoke Latin since like the 1930s

60s, and some stil do latin mass

pees in ur ass

I believe the reason they’re quiet is because the sound from people voices mostly dissipates by the time it reaches the walls, (because it’s so massive), so it can’t reflect off of them or if it does, travels very short before dissipating. A louder sound like a yell or an organ playing would fill the space more and bounce around, creating reverb because the sound waves have the energy to actually reach the walls and back.

Also, you’re supposed to be quiet in a cathedral which is also part of the reason I’m sure lol

They should make more cool buildings I’m sick of everything lookin like a box

Lmao have you seen the new McDonald's design?fuckin things just a black box with an M on top

If it lets them fit more of the couch tables sure thing, those are always full

I’m sitting at one of those right now, waiting to go home after work, they are pretty nice

Inshallah brother, now face towards MCa for prayer.

I miss the playground

This is why I’ve suffered through 5 years of architect school lmao I gotchu

I’m Orthodox. Can confirm that Catholic Churches are more interesting than Protestant ones

You should see baptist churches. They’re to protestant churches what protestant churches are to catholic churches

Aluminum sided, aluminum roofed, built in 4 days.

Sometimes even quicker than that, there’s some baptist churches in the south that set up those big ass tents people rent for events and stuff

But I hear in the south they got pretty good music, do they?

Oh heck yeah. Especially if it’s a Black Baptist church. Everyone is getting up and singing and feeling the music, even if you don’t want to. It’s just that moving.

Come to England and get opulent, protestant(ish), cathedrals! Also love the stave churches.

Don't come to England

Don't

All the cool ones are former Catholic churches that were forced to convert after the English Reformation

Not all, but fair point.

ok but no matter of what you believe we all can agree that most cathedrals and churches look fucking sick

Not mine💀 they renovated that shit now it looks horrible (they replaced the gorgeous floor tiles because a few were cracked)

Patterned floor tiles are pretty until a few of them break, then you are screwed.

just fill it with epoxy to replicate the design /s

I live in a medium to small size city in spain with what I believe is the oldest gothic cathedral in spain and just walking down the streets and seeing that fucking thing is awesome.

Fun to think, it probably was the first or one of the first gothic cathedrals in spain

I mean I heard that It was the first but let me check

(Edit) yes it is xdd

(Edit) (edit) its not the source wasn't right

I'm in a medium city in northern Italy and we have three small churches but they all look very good on the inside

Its cool what you can find in medium and small cities on europe. There is history everywhere. And some of the smaller cities that are least relevant now they where important in the past and they carry culture of that era in them

Mine is all fucked up because russians thought there are civilians hiding there or something

happy cake day and take care!!

Well yah they were designed to impress simple minded peasants

Then they said "hey you know what would be even cooler? We're just gonna fill this entire cathedral up with a bunch of whistles. I'm talking like 10,000 of them. Some the size of your pinky and some that stretch all the way to the fuckin cieling. We'll hook them up to a keyboard and group them up in ranks with each rank able to be turned off and on individually, and then we'll make it where you can turn multiple ranks off and on with one stop, and also we'll add one stop that turns every single rank on at once. Now we need air for this massive behemoth to actually make noise, and I don't think child labor pumping the bellows like we used to have for the small one in the old church will be enough. Let's hook it up to a water wheel in the fuckin river. Holy shit this is gonna be awesome."

Pipe organs are pretty damn neat and probably the best part of Gothic cathedrals after the architecture (also essentially a part of the architecture itself). Organists are thoroughly batshit though, in the best way possible. Just absolute madlads, the must unhinged of any type of musician. To look at a massive building designed and built around this instrument and think, "yep, I'm gonna master that shit." Fully deranged and I love them for it.

Also yeah, great way to convince the peasants you have an omnipotent and divine power backing everything you say and do.

Also make sure the magical book of God is in a language only we know how to read cuz that shit is questionable at best

Most yes, the one where i live? heck no.

Like wtf they have spent over 100 years building it and somehow in the like 30% they have built it already looks hideous

Bruh do you have a life

This is not connect to the post

how is it not?

My comment not your. Yours is connect mines not

winter break and boredom, and its not like I am on reddit all the time, I go for like 20 minutes leave a comment and then randomly respond and leave again

Sure😒😒🤢🤮💯💙😡😱🍑🦧🦍🌵🦺🛏

also orthodox churches

I love me some Orthodox iconography

Imo the coolest design

Even as a hindu.... Catholic churches are very beautiful

Hindu temples are absolutely beautiful, too. The iconography inside alone can be truly awe-inspiring.

European Chadthedrals vs American Megavirgins

You think America doesn't have cathedrals?

We have lots of old churches. I mean it’s been a primarily Christian nation for like 200-240 years.

I wouldn't say 200-240 years is old for a church.

Some religious people are only religious for the community and some go for the diet cult vibes 👀

I like to drink free wine and bread

I too like to drink bread

The community aspect it very important in the rural South. Despite the reputation as toothless idiots, most are just 30 years behind everyone else because it's such a poor area, so churches bringing a community together is still wildly important or helpful.

Considering how devoid of community so many places in the modern west are, good tor them

The one thing I really miss about religion is the community aspect.

I found out recently about mega churches and think it's crazy

Indeed, most truly religious people disagree with them. If they actually read the bible they'd realize Jesus himself would burn them down.

Matthew 21: 12-17 moment

Exactly what I was thinking. F*ck Joel Osteen.

As a Northern European protestant, I found this very confusing.

Me too my town just has a big pyramid and a few smaller ones.

American protestant churches are the most boring things known to man

Mine is literally in a crusty ass strip mall and on the inside it looks like a Starbucks

mine isn't a mega church they aren't all

Don’t forget the rock music

I just wanna say I love this comment section as a Christian. Everyone coming together to appreciate the art of another culture makes me really happy.

I think you're ignoring all the flame wars happening in the comments lmao

I'm a Lutheran, and my home church is like a tiny cathedral. I walked into a couple of those Protestant churches, and I felt so wierd, cause it didn't feel like a place of worship. There was no altar to act as a focus point, no stained glass windows depecting Bethlehem and the Crucifixion. It made me so uncomfortable lmao, I will never understand megachurch design. Return to sick AF cathedral-style churches.

I agree, they are just so expensive to build and the building methods are fairly outdated. Large beams to support a stone structure with the large arched doorways and windows also being structural. I can't imagine how much it would cost to build one today. Especially considering that labour is a lot more expensive than it was in the dark ages.

Also that level of craftsmanship is rare now. The engraving, woodwork, metalsmithing and creation if stainglass are rare artforms now.

Too used to magachurches.

Mega church preachers in designer sneakers

It’s true. As a child I was taken to shitty storefront churches and now as an adult despite being an atheist I love going into cathedrals and holy places with some actual effort put into the architecture.

I find that most pre-1500 Catholic cathedrals and churches are far superior (in terms of their internal feel) than the post 1500s ones.

St Peter’s is just so gaudy and over the top, I find the older western cathedrals to be much more refined internally.

I guess that pre reformation the cathedrals were about creating a space that was grand yet showed how god was greater than man, post reformation it’s just overly glitzy cope cathedrals made to try and attract more peasants.

I do agree with you, Roman and Gothic Architecture is, in my opinion, so much better than Baroque and Classical architecture

I love the massive yet humble look of the Roman churches with those thick walls covered with thin statues and sober paints

And at the same times I love the elegant look of the Gothic cathedral, that are so massive and yet so slender with the stone spires looking so light while pointing to the sky

That doesn't mean that I dislike more recent churches, but I want more buildings in the style of Colognes Cathedral or Vezelay Abbey.

Catholics frantically searching through the bible for the 84th time for the part where God gives divine authority to a pope.

(It doesn't exist)

Jesus said to Peter "upon this rock i will build my church" Peter was the first Pope.

Peter Griffin from family Guy funny moments compilation

He told that to Peter, yes. But never did he outline what he meant or that Peter or anyone else would have authority to make decrees on the doctrine of all the church.

He could have meant that Peter would lead the church for the time being, or have been speaking more generally about how the church would be built on disciples evangelizing to the non believers. He most likely meant that Peter would be the disciple to spread the gospel and lead the mission to evangelize to the world, but nothing about that verse implied divine authority. Yet for some reason Catholics went with the most far-fetched interpretation that strays closest to idolatry.

Additionally, Paul did more to build the early church than Peter. And there's no biblical evidence, and very little outside historical evidence, of Peter ever acting in a Papal or any kind of pseudo governmental capacity.

Also, the old laws and structure of the church, or at that time the Jewish faith, was outlined extensively in the old testament. If God had intended such a structure for the church he would have outlined it in more detail.

🤓🤓🤓

gets into serious argument.

Doesn't want serious answer

Arslurred mindset.

God is known for being vague and too formal u.u

Yet for some reason

Oh come on, some reason ? We all know why, $ and power.

No reading all that🔥

Most literate C*tholic.

Oh, well that settles it then /s

Jesus talking to Peter: I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (Matthew 16:19)

Protestant frantically removing the books that get them wrong from the Bible, so they cannot lose an argument

Didn't you bozos settle this argument in the 1500s? Nobody cares about old religion drama lol

Nah until Every Catholic admits they were wrong it's not over.

Fight us protestant

What? Man this meme is so American

As a muslim I find catholic churches stunning!

Many Protestant churches could double as a dance hall for weddings.

Wait y’all don’t go to church in an office building?

I'm Lutheran and I absolutely love Catholic churches.

Honestly, this was one of the factors for my conversion from Protestantism to Catholicism

Protestant when things aren’t bland and boring

I have a feeling Paul would have some things to say about the a church being the people and the message and not the building

Glad I live on the east coast where European cathedrals exist in America

Halo 3 theme?

And there’s free donuts, don’t forget the free donuts

Evangelicals*

The methodist church in my hometown is a beautiful church.

Did.. did Catholic churches seriously steal the Halo theme song genre?!?!!? Can't have shit in Rome

Poor catholics being asked to pay church tax again (God is very unhappy there aren’t more golden statues of Peter’s ballsack)

Lol, what are you smoking? Unless you want to join a specific church for which there is a membership fee, all money given are donation. You can be a full practicing catholic without giving a dime to the church.

Unlike the evangelicals, with their pay to win strategy. Those crazy happy clappies

This is true. I was a Catholic, and in the whole time I went, I gave a fiver once and that was it. In fact, there was a trip to the Holy Land happening in my church, and I was too poor to afford it, and the church offered to pay for me and my wife to go with them. Even the little shop they had at the entrance would give you stuff for free if you couldn't afford it. I bought my first rosary beads from there, a beautiful glass blue set, and it cost like £2 only lol god I loved that church.

Actually, I wasn't asked to or demanded in any way when I was still a catholic. It was expected, but not obligatory, to give a small donation every Sunday, but it was like one quarter to 2 dollars average. On the other hand, they did a lot of charity work...

At least here in my country, Evangelics (protestants, I think? dunno) are the ones obliged to pay 10% of their salaries to their church.

Orthodox churches>>>>>>

Don't know if they are the best, but I used to go to a Catholic Church with a Byzantine architecture, and it was indeed a splendid piece of art

My heart might go to Gothic Architecture, but Orthodox knows how to build a beautiful church

Protestants when they enter a Catholic church and they aren't allowed to take communion because of shitty man made rules

One of the main points of protestantism is basically that catholicism is a greedy coorperation run by the Vatican and that all of these fancy idols are nothing but a waste of money and for the Church to be able to think "what color is YOUR altar?!" about us poor plebians.

They'd probably just think "Why the fuck would you spend so much money on useless luxeries instead of using it to help people like you say your religion wants to do, this shit is only distracting you from your relationship with God".

Catholics when they realize Protestants don’t have to do anything to get into heaven except for accepting Christ as their savior

I can see this getting locked immediately

Too bad building a pretty bulding doesn't get God to show up

wtf is a megachurch, that's a regular ass church, where tf do you guys live? tf are your churches? mfin hypercubes?

American megachurches... iirc there are megachurches everywhere except America

[deleted]

My favorite part is when Protestantism says that that guy who broke the tradition in 1500 was more right than that guy who broke the tradition in 1600

[deleted]

You know that the books in the Bible are a form of tradition, right ?

The holy trinity, man. I'm an atheist and I know these things. God, Jesus and the holy spirit are 1 entity. The pope being a divine being or something may be a bit bs but whatevs. At least here it's the least damaging religion and they do a lot of charity work.

It depends, the chatolics sees the son (jesus) as equal to the father (god) so jesus himself is god, orthodox sees jesus still as the son of god but benheat him, to sum it up orthodox sees jesus as only one part of god and not as his totality like chatolics

bypassing Jesus Christ himself

who's also dead or in heaven or whatever. Not religious but I assume the point of 'closest man' is 'alive'.

[deleted]

What about the part where he died for our sins?

He died then resurrected, that way he could announce to everyone that he died for our sins

And then went to heaven which is basically dying again. So he's dead.

Jesus is actually god himself tho

Gonna cry about it ?

to be fair jesus god and the holy spirit are all the same being

Ah yes let me just call my good old friend Jesus

Excuse me y'all have jumbotrons?

I love me some battle churches!

The music is so peaceful

Mosques are better

Bro I’m Catholic and go to a modern church that doubles as a private school. It still looks awesome

Priests when I tell them they are supposed to be ascetic

Man I need to learn Latin

Bro hasnt seen nordic protestnt churches

I don’t get it

Should see old Lutheran churches, some of ones i been to in Texas are beautiful, they’re like very modest cathedrals. Like the Catholic churches you’d find in small towns, villages and in farmlands

Back in the day, a congregation would build a big beautiful place for worship. That was the structure's primary purpose: the church service. Nowadays there are so many other considerations like children's church, Bible classes, possibly recreation areas. With finances always an issue, everything including the worship area tends to be much more basic.

Went to Mexico a couple years back don’t remember the place but it was beautiful and I don’t like going to church

Isn't that part of why the reformation happened?

Peaks and Valleys my friend, peaks and valleys 🔥🧊

What is the singing from? Why is so familiar?

I used to be Catholic and am now not religious at all, but I will admit I do miss one and only one thing: The design and vibe of those churches

Stendhal syndrome

Most of the WELS churches I have been in usually look very nice on the inside. Nowhere near the grandeur of an old cathedral but still very nice.

Catholics were mentioned, I can now make a monty python reference.

Every sperm is sacred, every sperm is good, every sperm is wanted in our neighbourhood

Song name?

Grew up in a staid Lutheran church. My brother converted to Catholicism, at a nice church. I went to 1 service there, and I have to say that I was impressed by the ritual and majesty. Fun! Then, after the service, to have my mind blown by the fact that they had beer on-tap for the parishioners!

European protestant churches are also amazing

Wait til protestants see the catholic chapel called the Sedlec Ossuary.

Based

Tell me you’ve never seen a Lutheran church without telling me you’ve never seen a Lutheran church

Real

Wtf are people talking about I go to Protestant church and it has looks fairly normal (I’m European though)

Completely different atmospheres, I got to see a cathedral once and it was so quiet. It felt so disconnected from the outside world too because the specific one I visited had stained glass windows.

F*ck Oliver Cromwell 👍

Protestant and Catholic churches < Buddhist temples

Anglicanism - reforms of Protestantism with the beauty of Catholicism
Truly the perfect faith

you must pick one

God is a hoax, this discussion is stupid, and yall lame fighting like cattle.

ok athiest

Yeah but this is a meme about architecture, which is clearly not a hoax...

Man doesn't even believe in architecture

I am not talking about architecture, I am talking about the christian people in this comment section fighting about scriptures and shit

Cope 💪😎

Man, nothing like an enlightened atheist dunking on the stoopid masses, while spelling his attempted username wrong

No no, it is spelled correctly, it just isn't a real word. Yknow, I just made it up, like some dude made up God 10k years ago.

Hope you find your way one day brother.

I was a catholic, I did my communion and all that shit. I followed through my "way" and it lead me to realize that there is no way.

Cool story bro

It took longer than I expected

1984 reference, nice.

Ok boomer

Ah yes, another 12 year old trying to be funny.

Just don't look under the floorboards

I love the art of the cathedrals but absolutely hate the catholic church
